Brass Grades & Material Selection

We make brass neutral links from different machining brass grades according to customer requirements. We commonly use free-cutting brass grade IS 319 as our default grade when no specific grade is specified in the drawing, but we also support custom grades as required.

C36000 Free-Cutting Brass

C36000 is a free-cutting brass grade specified as UNS C36000 and covered by standards such as ASTM B16/B16M. C36000 provides excellent machinability and is suitable for brass neutral bars with drilling, tapping, threading, and other machining operations. Its electrical conductivity is about 26% IACS at 20°C.

IS 319 Free-Cutting Brass

IS 319 is an Indian Standard for free-cutting brass bars, rods, and sections. It is intended for machining applications, including high-speed machining. The specific IS 319 grade should be confirmed according to the required material specification.

CW614N

CW614N is a European designation for CuZn39Pb3 free-machining brass. It provides good machinability and is used for machined brass components. The specific material specification should be confirmed according to customer requirements.

Brass Grade Comparison

Brass Grade Standard / Designation Main Characteristic Machinability Electrical Conductivity at 20°C (% IACS)
C36000 UNS C36000 Free-cutting brass 100% 26% IACS
IS 319 Grade I IS 319 Free-cutting brass 90% 28% IACS
IS 319 Grade II IS 319 Free-machining brass 100% 26% IACS
IS 319 Grade III IS 319 Free-cutting brass 80% ≈25.4% IACS
CW614N CuZn39Pb3, EN 12164 Free-machining brass High 25% IACS
CW617N CuZn40Pb2 Brass for hot working and machining Good 28% IACS

Brass Neutral Bar Types & Configurations

Brass neutral links are available in different configurations, connection positions, mounting arrangements, and terminal designs. The exact configuration depends on the number of neutral connections in the panel layout.

Simple Brass Neutral Bars

Simple brass neutral bars have a basic bar design with multiple connection positions for neutral conductors. They are available in different lengths, hole counts, thread sizes, and layouts.

Multi-Way Brass Neutral Links

Multi-way brass neutral links provide multiple connection positions for neutral conductors.

Common configurations include 4-way and 8-way links, we also offer custom larger hole count configuration.

Single-Row and Double-Row Brass Neutral Links

Brass neutral links are also available with single-row and double-row connection layouts.

Brass Neutral Links with Insulating Base

Brass neutral links with an insulating plastic base for mounting and electrical separation. We supply different base and terminal configurations according to customer requirements.

DIN-Rail Mounted Brass Neutral Links

DIN-rail mounted brass neutral links are designed for mounting within DIN-rail electrical systems. These configurations can include a brass neutral link with a dedicated insulating base for rail mounting.

Custom Brass Neutral Links

We manufacture custom brass neutral links according to customer drawings, samples, and specifications. Custom options include connection positions, hole counts, hole spacing, thread sizes, mounting arrangements, lengths, finishes, and other required layouts.

Why Choose Brass for Neutral Bars?

Brass provides a good balance of machinability, electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties for neutral bars, but Brass neutral links have lower electrical conductivity than copper neutral bars. Here are a few points that make brass a suitable choice for neutral bars.

Good Machinability

Brass grades such as C36000 provide excellent machinability, making it suitable for neutral bar operations such as drilling, tapping, threading, and other machining work.

Suitable for Threaded Connections

Neutral bar has multiple holes and threads. Brass Neutral bar provides more durable threads than aluminum neutral bar.

Good Corrosion Resistance

Brass provides good corrosion resistance in many environments. The actual corrosion performance depends on the brass grade and service environment.

Good Balance for Machined Neutral Bars

For neutral bars with multiple holes, threads, and other machined features, brass grades can provide a practical balance of machinability, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. C36000 is also used for general machining and high-volume production.

Brass Neutral Bar Surface Finishes

We provide different surface finishes for brass neutral bars according to customer requirements .The suitable finish depends on the required electrical connection, environmental conditions, wear requirements, and appearance.

Finish Typical Purpose / Benefit
Natural Brass Brass surface without an additional plating coating
Nickel Plated Nickel coating used for surface protection, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance
Tin Plated Tin coating used for low-contact-resistance electrical connections and corrosion protection

Brass Neutral Bar FAQs

1. Can brass neutral bars be used with aluminum and copper conductors?

A brass neutral bar can be used with aluminum or copper conductors when the complete connection system is rated for the conductor material. The brass bar itself does not automatically make a connection suitable for both conductor types. The terminal, screw, lug, and connection design must be specified for the conductor being used.

2. What tightening torque should be used on brass neutral bar screws?

There is no single tightening torque for all brass neutral bars. The correct torque depends on the screw size, thread, conductor size, terminal design, fastener, and connection requirements.

3. Can the same brass neutral bar have different hole sizes and thread sizes?

Yes. A custom brass neutral bar can be machined with different hole diameters and thread sizes on the same bar. This can include different drilled holes, mounting holes, and threaded connection points.

4. Can a brass neutral bar be supplied with a plastic insulating base?

Yes. A brass neutral bar can be supplied as part of an assembly with an insulating base for mounting and electrical separation. Neutral busbar systems also use insulating support components for mounting the conductive busbar.

5. Does the brass grade affect machining quality in a neutral bar?

Yes. Brass grade can have a significant effect on machining performance. C36000, for example, is a free-cutting brass with a 100 machinability rating and is used for general machining and high-volume production.

6. Can brass neutral bars be manufactured to match an existing part?

Yes, a brass neutral bar can be manufactured from an existing sample, but the sample should be checked to establish the required dimensions, hole pattern, thread details, material grade, finish, and other manufacturing requirements before production.
